Car Care

During summer travel, vehicles are exposed to insect residue, bird droppings, and tree sap which can quickly bond to surfaces and dull a vehicle’s finish, reduce windshield visibility and cause interior damage.

That’s why Mike Pennington of Meguiar car care products recommend carrying quick-cleaning products to protect paint and preserve interior surfaces while on the road.

”A summer road trip comes with different challenges depending on where you’re driving,” says Pennington. “Some regions have high bug populations that can leave heavy deposits on your vehicle, while bird droppings can also etch into paint creating a potentially difficult issue to repair.

”What you remove early is always easier and safer to deal with than what has been baked by heat and time.”

What types of cleaning products should drivers keep in their vehicles for quick touch-ups or emergency cleanups?

Pennington’s cleaning kit includes a quick detailer spray, spray wash and wax, interior and glass wipes, microfiber towels, odor eliminator and small trash bag.

”You can give the entire vehicle a quick once-over in about 15 minutes, inside and out, which is much faster than what a full wash would require. It is always best to remove contaminants quickly before they become a real problem.

”If you’re on a road trip, that means stopping for fuel often, which is the perfect time to bring out your quick detail spray or waterless wash.”

Quick detailer spray removes light dust, fresh bug splatter and recent bird droppings from paint, glass and bumpers.

Pennington recommends the following exterior cleaning process:

  • Apply detailing spray directly on affected areas. Focus only on the contaminated area rather than the whole panel.
  • Give the product a few seconds to loosen debris. This softens hardened contaminants so they lift easily without scrubbing.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel to lift residue. Avoid scrubbing aggressively especially on hot surfaces to avoid swirl marks.
  • Keep quick detailer spray in the glove compartment so you can clean fresh contaminations quickly before they bond with paint.

”The right product is literally a car wash in a bottle” says Pennington. “Even after a long day on the road, you can easily clean your car in the hotel parking lot or even campsite without a hose and bucket.”

Handy Wipes for Interior

For the cabin, use wipes to clean the dashboard, console, touchscreen and door panels where fingerprints, sunscreen smudges, food crumbs and drink spills are usually found.

Choose wipes specifically made for automotive interiors, they are formulated to clean without damaging trim or fading surfaces.

Pennington suggests wiping affected areas in straight motions and focusing on small sections at a time so surfaces are evenly cleaned. Avoid over-saturating one spot and always follow up with a dry microfiber cloth to achieve a consistent finish.

For his road trips, Pennington keeps a small pack of wipes on hand. He performs a quick 60-second wipe down of the steering wheel and gear during fuel stops. Wiping off high-touch interior areas at each stop prevents dirt, oils and sunscreen residue from building up and bonding to surfaces.

“Regular attention to high-touch interior areas prevents contaminants from accumulating and becoming difficult to remove in hot weather conditions. It protects the interior from stains and keeps the cabin clean all through summer travel,” says Pennington.

Glass Cleaning Wipes for Better Visibility

Use glass-cleaning wipes to remove dirt without streaks or residue. Pennington advises wiping in straight motions from top to bottom to ensure contaminants are lifted in one direction and not spread around in circular patterns.

Avoid using one microfiber cloth for all glass surfaces as it can transfer heavy grime from the windshield and front windows to cleaner areas like side mirrors.

Microfiber Towels

A plush microfiber towel is ideal for exterior paint because it is soft and highly absorbent when it comes to lifting bug residue and road grime. A mid-weight microfiber towel is best for wiping dust, sunscreen residue and spills from interior materials or surfaces.

For glass, a tight-weave waffle or smooth glass microfiber towel prevents streaking and guarantees a haze-free finish.

“Using several microfiber towels for different areas of the vehicle is about controlling contamination at every stage of the cleaning process. Use one towel for road grime, another for glass and another for interior surfaces. This stops microscopic grit spreading across the vehicle,” Pennington says.

Odor-Eliminating Sprays

In hot weather, odors from wet swimsuits, sports gear, food crumbs and drink spills are unpleasant. Pennington uses an odor-neutralizing spray that targets odor-causing bacteria rather than masking smells.

Before putting wet swimsuits or gym bags in your car, line the trunk or seat area with a dry microfiber towel or spare mat. This absorbs moisture and reduces odor buildup which makes the spray treatment more effective.

Pennington provides these additional quick-cleaning tips to maintain your vehicle’s clean appearance while on the road.

  • Wipe acidic bird droppings immediately. This reduces the risk of paint etching and permanent clear coat damage.
  • Clean all glass surfaces before a road trip. This reduces glare from sunlight, headlights and provides clear visibility in all directions.
  • Wipe the steering wheel, center console, door handles, touchscreen and gear selector where dirt, oils and sunscreen residue accumulate fastest.
  • Use spray wash and wax regularly. This removes light dust and restores gloss before a full wash.
  • Restock cleaning supplies before travel weekends. Running out of supplies mean contaminants linger on your vehicle.
  • Empty the trash at every fuel stop. This stops clutter and prevents odors from spreading inside the cabin.
  • Store wet swimsuits, towels and sports gear in a waterproof bag and a separate cargo area to prevent odors inside the cabin.
  • Park in the shade whenever possible. Lower temperatures slow down the baking process that causes contaminants to bond with paint.
